Canada is one of the most popular student destinations, drawing a huge student crowd, every year. The benefits of studying in Canada include; world-class education, high-ranked universities, post-study work opportunities, and the possibility of Permanent Residency.

No doubt, students are eager to get into Canadian Universities to pursue their desired Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diploma programs. In this article, we have tried to answer all the major question that students have on intakes and admissions criteria in Canadian institutions, to facilitate Study in Canada for International Students.

What is the major intake in Canadian Institutions?

The major intake through which students can apply to Universities and institutions for all programs; Bachelors, Masters and Diploma programs, is the September/ Fall Intake.

Are there any other intakes for which students are eligible?

If your September intake gets missed, you may also go for the January/ Winter Intake, however, this intake may or may not be available for your desired program. You need to verify with the University authorities as to the availability of seats. As for the May/Summer Intake, it is available for extremely restricted seats, subject to availability.

How should I know which intake to target?

You need to do thorough research on the List of Universities in Canada for International Students and the programs offered. You also need to get an idea about the seats available and the application deadlines. You need to apply well ahead of the application deadlines in order to be eligible for scholarships since the number of awards is limited in number.

Further, you must keep in mind that you will be able to apply to all institutions and programs in September, however, for the January intake, not all Universities or programs will be available to apply, and the May intake has the narrowest choice of programs. In fact, Master’s programs will almost certainly not be available during the May Intake.

Can I know about the tests acceptable by Canadian institutes?

The IELTS is acceptable for all institutions and programs for students who wish to Study in Canada. TOEFL score is also acceptable in some Universities. A very limited number of institutions accept PTE scores.

GRE and GMAT, are not mandatory* requirements for entrance to programs, however, high ranked Universities do give preference to students with high GRE/GMAT scores.

What is the Minimum IELTS Score Criteria to Get an Admit?

The following is the minimum IELTS criteria set by the majority of the institutions:

For PG programs, an overall band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 and

For UG programs, an overall band score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.

What are the minimum Academic scores that Institutions look for?

Majority of the degree programs need academic scores of 65% or more as the minimum requirement to grant admission to the student.

UG & PG Diplomas have a slightly relaxed minimum requirement of 50% or above as far as the academic performance of the student is concerned.

Do I need to have work Experience for getting into programs?

PG Diploma and Technical Masters programs have no need for previous work experience*, however, MBA programs do have minimum work experience requirement that must be met by students taking admission into these programs.
